Abstract
Purpose: We investigated the feasibility and safety of laparoscopic wedge resection for treating gastric submucosal tumor, as compared with conventional open surgery.

Methods: From January 2004 and to December 2005, fifty-four patients underwent laparoscopic (LAP) or conventional open (OPEN) wedge resection for gastric submucosal tumors. We analysed age, gender, the presenting symptoms, the diagnostic modalities, size and location of the masses, the operative time, the pathologic diagnosis, the postoperative hospital course, use of analgesics, the postoperative morbidity and recurrence.

Results: The time to first flatus (1.7¡¾0.7 vs. 2.6¡¾0.8 days, respectively, p=0.001) and liquid diet feeding (2.1¡¾0.7 vs. 2.7¡¾0.7 days, respectively, p=0.002) were shorter in the LAP group than the OPEN group. The number of patients who needed additional analgesics was less in the LAP group than in the OPEN group (1 (3.7%) vs. 10 (37.0%), respectively, p=0.005) But there was no significant difference for the days of the postoperative hospital stay (5.3¡¾1.1 vs. 8.1¡¾7.1days, respectively, p=0.058). Recurrence was observed in one patient who had undergone open surgery.

Conclusion: Laparoscopic wedge resection of gastric submucosal tumor is safe and feasible.
